best local place to buy mums?

I usually make a trip to the nursery in the Great Swamp but don't have time this year.

Do the plants from Home Depot last?  Or are there better sources?

TIA

I think "mums" and "last" are not really a concept, which is why I bought the dollar ones at Home Depot the other day. The only issue is they still have tiny unopened buds, so it's luck of the draw as far as what color they'll be!

Millburn Shop Rite usually has a nice selection at a good price.

An excellent point - I should have stated "last through the fall"

I don't know about this year, but last year, Metropolitan Plant Exchange had fabulous mums and they were less expensive than ShopRite. For mums, I try not to get them from HD or SR because I find they last longer if you get them from an actual plant place (nursery, florist, etc.). Caldwell Nursery is really nice too, but they tend to be a little pricey.

Mums last. They are perennials.  If you plant them in the ground they’ll come back and bloom again next fall.

Mums are a commodity, grown by factory size nurseries, which in turn supply many retailers.

The retailers put mums on sale at various times, so no one retailer is the cheapest all the time.

Some mums are in disproportionately small pots.  These dry out very quickly, so you need to water every other day.

Yes, you can plant them, and they do come back.  However, they tend to grow tall and somewhat ragged.  You need to 'pinch' them once or twice during growing season to get the many-branched, relatively short and mounded presentation you get from newly purchased plants.
